"...But You Can Make Yourself Into Gold"

I have been a fan of Alejandro (Alexandro) Jodorowsky's for quite some time now (specifically 2nd year of college). During this those first few years, I was in fervent search of his films, specifically "The Holy Mountain". Eventually I found out that they were all being officially re-released, and I snatched them up without hesitation. Good move.

Here is my piece/poster for the film. I have heard rumblings of a renewed interest in this particular movie. I think this is quite good, as Jodorowsky deserves the credit. I don't however like people exclaiming long-time interest in his work as "riding a trend". That's uncool. So don't do that. Instead, just enjoy, and share your interest. That, and pick up a copy of this print in my store!

And follow me on Instagram for constant updates!

Not a trend!
Also "not a trend", is the practice of artists working out an idea during a cold beer at a calm restaurant/ bar. These are no exceptions. Its a good way to get away from your mental boundaries, and allow the thoughts to unravel themselves.

the Tall Man

THIS is a depiction of "the Tall Man", the central antagonist of the Phantasm film series. I won't go into too many details about it. In fact, just go here and buy the damned dvd. Or more importantly, go here and buy a print!

Hellboy!

I present my piece for the 20th Anniversary Hellboy show, at Hero Complex Gallery, Los Angeles. I call it "Anung-Un-Rama". for  obvious reasons (obvious if you know Hellboy. If you don't, check here). What was great about the show is Mike Mignola, the creator of Hellboy, popped in and also showed a piece with the rest of us contributing artists! Thats fairly bitchin'.

Like all my work, this started as a fairly basic sketch. Ill call them "Blecch Sketches", as in the written vomit sound. Actually, these sketches are much like vomit, as in I have to get them out before things get worse and I lose the idea. I tend to get a little panicky about this possibility. Thus rushed, frantic sketches.

(update)
I was sent this photo of THE CREATOR OF HELLBOY HANGIN' OUT WITH MY PIECE!...and sure, some others.

AAAAAAAAGH!

Pee Wee always would greet us with a guttural yell. It was almost black metal, but with color. This is a slightly older piece that made its debut at a recent Monster Mania Convention. Just about everyone who saw it gave it a color-metal yell... and it was good.

Monster Mania, March 2014

This past weekend, I manned my own table at Monster Mania. To those not familiar with this event, it is considered the largest horror convention in the U.S. It always features special guests from the world of horror t.v. and film, in addition to special guests featured in other cultish media. In addition, a large draw is the vast vendor section. Here you can purchase everything from posters to movies and toys, as well as a variety of other amazing and random merchandise. Its truly like a flea market from the other side of reality.

I have been going to this event for a few years now, and always thought about jump in as a vendor. The "do-it" switch went live and I jumped in big. I spent a few months getting t-shirts screened, prints made, and my whole setup constructed. It became completely worth it to me even before the convention. Creating is my drug, and I was in a pure binge on it.
This is a small fraction of what could be seen in the event. Sitting at my table I saw the same folks walk by a few times over many hours, simply because they were finding new things each lap around. Though this was the Large ballroom, there few four other similar-sized rooms for a movie theater, guest signing/photo booths, and more vendors.
Behind my table I hung my large prints to show. So many people came by to chat, peruse the merchandise, and walk away with something new to play with and hang around their abode. It was wonderful to meet so many fans of great horror flicks and art and everything else. I always described the convention as a place for like-minded people to gather happily, and share their enthusiasm. For three days, I experienced it up close. I walked away each night on a complete high. The folks there were so kind and joyful.

Many people claim to "not get" horror or sci-fi or different pop-culture. But its the same as any entertainment. People gather always to share their enthusiasm for sports or music, and here people gather to psych-out on stuff that screams and roars and sheds blood and guts and rides off into the moonlight. I have loved horror since before I could assemble proper words. This was my element, and I  grooved with it big time.

The other huge high, was having my little sister there with me. She has been a huge part of my life since she was born. Now in college, she has a full plate, but took the time to come by and help and hang with big bro. We chilled and laughed and soaked everything in together, and she was a COMPLETE NATURAL salesperson! Here we are lording over the creepy table, in the disneyland from the underworld. Thanks Monkey!

When asked if I would be back, by some other great vendors, my answer was a firm "HELL YEAH!". Hopefully reading this, you get the idea to stop The Crowne Plaza hosted Monster Mania, and come visit me. Maybe you even walk away with something of your own?

The Bearded Eye

I don't often go FULL paint or ink for a piece. I guess its just nervousness, or time restraints. Not sure, but here is one particular piece largely created with ink. I have gone through a few different iterations of the bearded cyclops over the years. It is now Im happy with the final piece. Enjoy!

"The Mashup" Show, 2013

FIRST POST OF 2013! Its a bit late, Im aware, but with this holiday hangover, one incident is no real issue. Anyway, I present my piece for "The Mashup Show", for the Gauntlet Gallery of San Francisco. Apparently the Gallery owner caught some of my work at Gallery 27 in
Chicago, and was kind enough to invite me over.

This shows theme, had the artists pick a famous work by a favored artist, and concoct their own version. In my case, I chose "Guernica", by Pablo Picasso (shown below). I remember being mesmerized by "Guernica" in an art class in the 9th grade. I may have missed half the class just looking at it. I had picked a few other pieces to tribute, but ultimately they had no chance on Guernica. Now, what drove me to adorn the board with the family of Xenomorphs, is a bit of a mystery. Perhaps its something I saw in the lines, or maybe had something to do with a thin piece of circular plastic. Who's to know?

"Chaos-Bringer!I AM POWER!”

Recently helped out (on a smaller scale) with the filming of a friends film production. Somehow, they saw some work of mine, and asked me to contribute a piece to run in the credits. I had to depict the artist characters vision of the main character ( a redheaded lady...of course). So this is it. Another friend and I both agree it to look like Jean Grey. I wonder why? Anyway, I used my favorite import markers for this fiery vixen. I love those Tombo's.

Also, the movie is called "Colorfly". More details later.

This is Me on Level 10 Excitement. "Crazy4Cult" show

After much necessary deliberation, I present to you my piece for Gallery 1988's upcoming Crazy4Cult (yes the 4th one. Click for poster)...in NEW YORK!!! Its called "Always Like This".

Crazy for Cult has been a series dedicated to cult classic films. For this, I have chosen to do a piece based on the movie "Leon" (a.k.a. "The Professional). I have moved away from digital coloring, so this is a mix of inks and pencil. I love this movie, so watching it over and over for reference was no problem.

I have shown with Gallery 1988 for some time, but this is both my and their first New York show. They have gone through a few months of back-and-forth, negotiating a new space. It has certainly worked out, because the show will take place in the esteemed Meatpacking District (address soon to follow). I just hope this is the first of many NYC shows for the Folks at '1988. I cannot wait to go!

"American Heroes" Show, 2012

I present to you a piece I created for Gallery 27's July "American Heroes" show. This is called "Lincoln A.D. 2012, and was made in a manner I have creating pieces for quite some time. Some would say that going at you're art in this fashion repeatedly may be boring. I wouldn't. I love working this way. As happy as I am to be a part of this show, I was sad to see this piece go. I may have to purchase myself a giclee print from my soon-to-be-opened STORE! (...stay tuned).

"Wes Anderson" Show, 2012

It's a joy to be able to show at galleries. Its a distinct joy have work at a galleries FIRST show. I was recently asked to contribute at Gallery 27, a new chicago gallery in the artistic Halsted area. Apparently the owner caught some of my work at Gallery 1988. What really sold me, was that Gallery 27's first show was Wes Anderson-themed (whose work I prize as favorites). After that, it was no question that I would send a "Life Aquatic" piece. So I present "This is an Adventure". Aptly, the show is called "Futura" (click for the poster).

This is an early sketch for an idea I passed on. Frankly, Im very happy with my completed piece. For the first time in a while, worked solely in acrylic (with some colored pencil peppered throughout).  I want to thank Gallery 27 for an opportunity to have my FIRST show in Chicago!

"Is This Thing On?" Show, 2012

I proudly present my inclusion in the upcoming Gallery 1988 show: IS THIS THING ON? 2: The Weird Year. Opening March 9th, this show is the (obvious) sequel to last years first "Is This Thing On" Comedian art show. I wasn't in last years, but I AM THIS YEAR MOFO! And this year is hosted by "WEIRD AL" YANKOVIC! Go figs?

Each artist is to have their choice of comedian to portray, and I chose Steven Wright. I have enjoyed the surreal, "whoa, what?" comedy this guy is master of...so it was not so hard to choose. This piece is called "Im Exhausted from Trying to Believe Unbelievable Things".

(Update)

Check out a photo gallery of this awesome show!

Candy Baaaar! "Bill Murray" Show, 2011

AAAAAAAAH! Here is my piece for the Gallery 1988 show, dedicated to Mr. Bill Murray "Please Post Bills". Once again, proudly, Im sending off some stuff thrown on paper out to Los Angeles! Excitement, and relief wash over me like...a bath? This piece, instead of picking out a favorite role ( cant pick just one ), focuses on the man within..aka the version dressed as a golden devil saying "hello!" from the golf course.

What Time Is It? "Garbage-Pail Kids" Show, 2011

The time, and strange interactions with street crime and hospitals, have passed by. Despite all this time, the earnest work and dedication to one of the coolest west coast art show interactions prevails. I present my piece for the Garbage Pail Kids show for Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles.

This piece, like all the rest in the show, is a version of an existing Garbage Pail Kid. In this case, the character is named "Hy Gene". Take a wild guess why.

Here are a few new/old new personal pieces. They fit together, like a running narrative. I'll save that explanation for when the rest are done. All were done with my usual mix: acrylic, pencil, ink, crayon, colored pencil, accidental blood. You are excused.
